My VMware blog

To help others as others have helped me

lookupservice/sdk – SSL certificate verification failed.

This evening I was setting up a new home VMware lab and had installed ESXi 5.1 and soon after the vCSA 5.1 (Virtual Center Appliance). I then went to login using the default username and password (root / vmware) but was prompted with the following unexpected error message “Failed to connect to VMware Lookup Service https://vCSA:7444/lookupservice/sdk – SSL certificate verification failed.”.

Failed to connect to VMware Lookup Service https://vCSA:7444/lookupservice/sdk - SSL certificate verification failed.

After some investigation the issue turned out to be related to the SSL certificate matching the original host name which is odd as its a new install.

To resolve the issues I performed the following

  1. Log in the VCSA itself via https://<vcsa-name>:5480
  2. Navigate to the ‘Admin’ tab
  3. Turn ‘Certificate regeneration enabled‘ to ‘yes‘ by using the ‘Toggle certificate setting‘ button
  4. Reboot the vCenter Server Appliance

After the reboot and waiting for a few minutes I was able to login and continued the lab build.
